EE 202 - Circuit Theory II

    Course Content

This is the 2nd and final course in the chain of Circuit Theory courses. The course is accompanied with a separate laboratory course (EE214).

The course starts with the discussion of coupled inductors. The dot-convention, power/energy relations are introduced and the passivity condition is given.

In the next part of the course, the time-domain description of N’th order circuits is studied. The main goal is the introduction of the state equation formalism for this purpose. (Other analysis methods such as node/mesh and modified node analysis methods are also given.) The solution of N’th order constant coefficient differential equations is studied and zero-input and zero-state solutions are developed. Particular solutions for the exponential inputs are studied. The Laplace transformation based solution are studied.

The next topic is the AC analysis. After the introduction of phasors, the phasor domain analysis of LTI dynamic circuits is given. The average power, reactive power and complex power definitions are given. Single-phase power factor compensation problems are studied. AC analysis topic is continued with the analysis of balanced 3-phase systems. 3-phase power calculations are emphasized.

In the last part of the course, Laplace domain (s-domain) circuit analysis is studied. The network functions are introduced. The zero-state responses are studied. The frequency response for 1st and 2nd order circuits are studied. The 2nd order resonance circuit is examined. The approximate magnitude and  phase response plots (Bode plots) are studied.

This course builds a foundation to many courses in system theory, circuit design and power systems.
